Monica Rodriguez | Puerto Rico / USA

A visual artist, she completed a master’s degree from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, USA (2011), and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program, New York, USA (2013). Her videos, performances and installations explore the connection of art and politics as complementary spheres that interpenetrate. She focuses on the registers, narratives, and mediums through which the history of social movements is disseminated and represented, striving to pave the way to critical reflection beyond an illustrative description of political events. She has exhibited at the Flux Factory, New York, USA (2012); Gran Bienal Tropical, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2011); Pact Zollverein, Essen, Germany (2011); California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, USA (2010); and other venues. Monica Rodriguez lives and works out of Los Angeles.

None of the Above | 2013, installation

In the 1950s, Puerto Rico was declared a Free Associated State of the United States, an ambiguous status: despite having its own government, the country is subjected to US laws. None of the Above refers to the plebiscites held in the island between 1967 and 2012 to try and redefine its political statute with regard to the USA. Rodriguez reflects and opposes the definitions of national independence, sovereignty, and Free Associated State, relating them to the symbols that represent them.
